Senna
Cassia Angustifolia is a traditional medicinal plant belonging to the family Caesalpiniaceae. It is commonly known as senna makkai or cassia senna. C. Angustifolia is native to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Yemen. It is a rapid-growing shrub 5–8 m tall, extensively cultivated for its fruit and leaves. This plant is recognized in British and USA pharmacopoeias. The leaves and pods of C. Angustifolia are used in the form of a decoction powder for intestinal worms as an anti-helmenthic.
The plant is mainly valued for its cathartic properties and is specially useful in habitual constipation. Senna leaves contain anthraquinone derivates, which are present in both free and combined state. The laxative principles sennoside A and sennoside B, isolated from leaves and pods of senna, constitute important ingredients in purgative medicines.
